New Delhi - India's Navy and coast guard were trying Monday to contain an oil spill off Mumbai which officials described as serious.

The spill was causing serious environmental concern, said Ashok Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra

state of which Mumbai is capital. 'We are trying to contain it as far as possible.'

Coastal districts had been placed on high alert and fishing activities stopped.

The spill was caused by the collision of two Panama-registered cargo ships, MSC Chitra and MV Khalijia III, about 9 kilometres off Mumbai port on Saturday.

The MSC Chitra was listing at a 75-degree angle and at least 200 of the containers it was carrying were floating in the water, NDTV news channel reported.

Some of these containers contained diesel, petrol and hazardous chemicals, coast guard officials said.

Bunker oil was also leaking from the Chitra and the oil slick was gradually moving towards the coast.

Operations at India's busiest port - Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust - were stopped and the Navy would take a decision after a survey Monday on whether a channel for bigger ships could be reopened.

Officials were holding a meeting in Mumbai to assess the situation and plan emergency measures.

Environmental emergency teams had been formed for clean-up operations once the slick reaches land.

A team of salvage experts was being flown in from the Dutch city of Rotterdam along with equipment, the Times of India quoted the Chitra's agent Satish Durne as saying.

The cause of the collision is not yet known. India's Director General of Shipping Satish Agnihotri has started a probe into the incident.

A case has been registered against the crew and owners of both ships under India's Environment Protection Act, Maharashtra's Environment Minister Suresh Shetty said.

The captains of the ships have been summoned to a Mumbai police station for questioning. All 33 crew members were rescued Friday.
